Registration is open for the engineering design and racing contest set to culminate in a two-day event in Huntsville, Ala., on April 13-14, 2012. “Students hailing from four continents come together in friendly competition,” he said. “More importantly, they come to meet one another, to compare ideas and turn shared dreams of spaceflight into lasting friendships and future partnerships.” NASA will broadcast live race coverage via NASA TV and the online Webcasting service UStream. The school teams spent months creating small Lego robots programmed with special software for this contest, which included placing sensors in "volcanoes," deploying habitats and rescuing a stranded "moon buggy." The robotic competition aims to engage students in math, science, technology and engineering. Each team had four students.
The Lunar Roving Vehicle LRV was an electric vehicle designed to operate in the low-gravity vacuum of the Moon and to be capable of traversing the lunar surface, allowing the Apollo astronauts to extend the range of their surface extravehicular activities. They needed a moon buggy! In May 1969 NASA officials decided that a "Lunar Roving Vehicle" LRV, to be housed in the descent stage of the Moon lander, was the best way to extend the range of the astronauts. The Marshall Space Flight Center, directing the development of the LRV, issued a request for proposals to industry on July 11, 1969.

That’s why we did a crash test this year, to guarantee our safety on the buggy. NASA set up a course for the competition that simulates moon terrain, including several obstacles. Students are expected to design a moon buggy that will be able to ride through the terrain without any issues. “The students designed this moon buggy all by themselves,” Skara said.
